A dirty filter will over work your blower motor ($400 and up) if you are lucky the capacitor will blow not the motor ($20 +service call) the circuit board can be damaged ($350 and up) the limit switch can get too hot and need replacing ($100 and up).
A filter is under $10 do not buy any that cost more unless you have the thick media filter. Media filters last longer than the 1 inch thick filters and are usually 3 inches or thicker with a special filter cabinet to fit them.
